Chapter 14

The sun crept further into the sky as we walked down the palace steps. It was a stunning day, and I was riding a serious high from claiming a new, powerful priestess.

Elves waved cheerily at us as we passed, and there was a definite buzz of excitement in the air as the festival was set up.

“Empress,” a young elf woman said as she hurried up to us. “Good morning! It won’t be too much longer before everything is ready. We have the finest cooks preparing the food!”

“Take your time.” Verda smiled. “I can just tell it’s going to be wonderful.”

The young elf nodded and then hurried off to arrange some of the floating orbs. She just had to wave her rune-covered staff toward the glowing spheres for them to float around into a zigzag pattern.

“Jack!” Grez called as he hurried down the palace steps with Myra. “Good morning! Empress! Priestesses! Good morning everyone!”

The yellow-haired elf was always cheery, but he looked like he was truly buzzed out of his mind. He pulled Myra by the hand to run down and greet us, and he gave Verda a deep bow.

“What a night!” Grez said. “We spent hours in the library. There truly was every book imaginable from the ancient elves! All you could possibly want to know about runes was in there. I learned so much.”

“It really was fascinating,” Myra said. “Thank you for letting us study!”

“You are very welcome,” Verda said with a gracious bow of her head. “Why don’t you join us? I have something I want to show all of you. We can walk there now while the festival is being set up.”

“We would love to join.” Grez lit up all over. “Thank you, Empress.”

“It’s a beautiful morning for a stroll,” I said. “Where are we going?”

“I think you’ll like it,” Verda said mysteriously as she continued to lead us down the main road.

The women admired the reflection of their dresses in every shop window we went by as we headed past the spiral staircase. Verda then led us to the right along a side street that was much narrower than the others.

It seemed to twist and turn forever as we walked past tightly packed houses. I started to get disoriented as the sound of the central city faded, and we kept turning corners on an endless road of white stone. Grez excitedly pointed to every tiny rune detail that stood out, and Myra had to stop him knocking on people’s doors to wake them up and ask questions about their windows.

“This is like a maze,” Aleia said as we made another sharp turn.

“I suppose it is,” Verda chuckled. “But I promise you won’t get lost. We’re going somewhere very special. The most protected place in the whole of the Empire.”

“Really?” I asked. “More protected than the palace?”

“Oh, yes,” Verda said. “The palace is just full of elves and runes. If our destination was ever visited by someone with evil intentions, though, it would be very terrible indeed.
